Well, since Doug is so hard to appease, and since I'm a lazy bastard, this is where we shall plot the new forums. Doug, I have no idea how good you are with site design, but if you want to give designing the forums a shot, I can give you all the files and maybe even webspace for you to make a new forum a reality. Since we seem to be doing alright as far as bandwidth goes (we hit 1.3GB last month, but we have 115 total), and size isn't a big issue either, I can deal with us hosting our own forums... I'm just glad I we don't worry about our own servers and that's all taken care of for us. All I ask is we find a system that isn't a total hog on resources. I was looking at www.simplemachines.org/ because it was supposedly very efficient and more skinable than YaBB. Post ideas and crap about it.

Allright Edwin, I accept your challenge. www.dougfungus.netI tried out the simplemachines boards and I must say, their not bad. I'd have no problem building and maintaining them, Infact it would be an honnor. If you want me to persue then set me up the webspace and I'll get started on them right aways. If you want to, we can keep working off mine but I think more than a handful of us have figured out the hard way the horrors that canaca has to offer. It would be easier. Let me know what you think.

This seems like an excellent idea. I approve wholeheartedly.

Full Metal Pac-Man HAHAHAHAHA
As opposed to transfering everything, I think I'll start from scratch. just email me all the server info, I can get started as soon as tomorow.
p.s. I had already changed the skin. If you go on the simply machines website it is the one called apollo. I chose it since it was the closest to matching your current theme. I figured i'd start with that and progressivly alter it as we need to from there since I dont fully know how to alter PHP documents... yet. If you find any other ones you like or find interesting let me know.

Don't take this the wrong way, but giving you free reign of our servers is a HUGE security risk. I don't think anyone would hand over their webspace and database to someone they hardly know. Transfer is much safer for me and Ryan. Sorry.
I'm fine with you being forum dictator for life though.

I suppose when you put in that perspective it does sound like a silly request. On the other hand, How will I be able to alter core files if I dont have access to the ftp server? Well, I guess everything is setup then if you want to use what I already have. If you want to transfer it then let me know. If not you will only have to take care of the linking process.

Well, given the fact that most forum software makes use of the MySQL server and nothing needs a specific path, you can develop the forum on a different server (or even locally using a suite like XAMPP, link below) then copy it to it's permanent home by just copying all the files and editing the settings file for the forum. In the case of Simple Machine's, the settings file is in the root of the forum and it's named 'Settings.php'. Open that up, and you can see how you can just edit the file so your forum changes will work with any properly set up database. I've set up a SMF on my webspace (http://edwininspace.torrentialequilibrium.net/forum/), so I can work in tandum with whatever you want to test, plus it's running on the eventual frame database of what will be the new forums. XAMPP: www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

So, this has come to a halt. Any comments from anyone? If someone else wants to take a crack at it, post here.

Ok Edwin, I'm not going to lie to you. I found my way back to Manitoba, And got a job, and am going back to school. The time I had amassed while traveling has now disapeared. I dont have time to make skins and learn to setup things with my already buisy schedual. If you need any help here, I'll be glad to chip in what I can. But from here on in you will hear no more complaints regarding the forums.

As it stands, nobody wants to post on the forums. I doubt anybody's gonna volunteer to build new ones.

I don't think slipping them cocaine works over the internet. I really just don't think anyone cares enough to join.
